Kate

I admire the way the meteorite glass shimmers in the sunlight, so I crouch next to it. It shimmers as I look at it from different angles, a rainbow of colors overlaid on a darker background. Beautiful. I carefully brush away the sand around the unusually colored glass, picking it out of the hole made by the meteorite. I rub my fingertips over the smoothness of it before adding it to the small collection in my backpack. A few sentimental mementos of my first time with Errol. I never thought I would be so sappy, but here I am. I look up from my bag, my smile fading. I never expected this to happen, not with Errol or anyone else.

I'm definitely on that terrifying, uncertain path I've always been careful to avoid. The one that leads to emotional intimacy...and love. Though that's not right either. I need to be honest with myself. I'm not just on the path that leads to love. I'm already there. I've already fallen head over heels for this honorable, sexy, brave Zmaj. I'm sure it's love, even after knowing him only for a matter of days.

Just as I'm certain in my very bones that Errol is serious about me. And loyal. He's a deeply loyal person I can always trust. As uncertain as I am about everything else, I know Errol's character is beyond reproach. That trust is enough to force me past my internal protections, enough to let myself hope that this thing between us will work out. Will last.

"Kate?" I turn at Errol's voice. "It is time to leave."

I smile at him, I shoulder my backpack, and head over. He smiles back, taking my hand as I reach him. We walk back towards the rover, the sand around us glimmering with pockets of more glass. It really is a sight to behold.

"Is everything fine?" he asks as we slide into the vehicle, his eyes on my face.

"Yes," I reassure him, leaning over to kiss his cheek. "Everything's fine." More than fine. I feel alive in a way I never expected to. He nods, a slight smile curling his lips as he settles back in his seat.

The journey back to the city is vastly different than the one to the rover. For one, it takes a fraction of the time now that we're driving rather than on foot. For another, when Errol and I fall silent, the quiet is comfortable rather than tense.

He holds my hand the whole way back.

When we do arrive at the city, Errol comes with me to go see my friends first. I want to let them know I have the rover back on line. I also let them know that I'm planning to go back to Errol's home with him.

"Oh, cool. Can I come with?" Fallon asks. "I want to see what else is out there."

I look up at Errol. I don't want to invite more people to his little community without a go ahead from him.

"I know anyone who wants to come will be welcome," he reassures her with a smile.
